How do I do I plug a Christmas ornament into a strand of Christmas tree lights?

I have a Hallmark ornament that will light up and "talk" when plugged into the light strand. The instructions aren't very helpful. I didn't think it would ba a big deal. I unscrewed a light on the strand and plugged the one connected to the ornament. Nothing.
