What is the link between Leeds (Yorks, UK) and owls?

There are often owls and sheep involved in symbols of leeds (e.g. the old leeds met symbol and the leeds city council one) I'm uming the sheep is linked to the old wool industry in leeds but what us the significance of the owl?
