With the airline industry in such financial trouble, is it putting lives at risk???

You may well be right,I don't know much about the Australian airlines but I do know Spain if the quality and workmanship is anything like how they build their houses, I wouldn't touch one of their planes with a barge pole and my experience of the Spanish is they will do anything in pursuit of another euro, your well being and safety is of no concern to them.
