Filing separate vs. filing joint?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of filing separate in comparison to filing joint. My wife has a load of old tax debt and medical bill and makes a lot less money than I do. I have multiple LLC's and make twice what she makes and I'm trying to get the maximum amount of deductions and money back for us. Any incite is appreciated.
